Vitamin D is Essencial to prevent from cancer

Since overweight and corpulent women are at risk for chronic diseases and incline to have less-than-optimal levels of vitamin D, Dr. Caitlin Mason, Ph.D., research fellow at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center required knowing if fleshy menopausal women could increase their vitamin D blood levels with weight loss. It turns out those who lost more than 15 percent of their body weight experienced notable increases in the fat-soluble vitamin D.

"Since vitamin D is generally lower in persons with obesity, it is possible that low vitamin D could account, in part, for the link between obesity and diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes," said Mason, the paper's leading author, published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. "Determining whether weight loss helps change vitamin D status is important for understanding potential avenues for disease prevention."

The year-long study - one of the largest ever conducted to evaluate the outcome of weight loss on vitamin D - involved 439 overweight-to-obese, sedentary, postmenopausal Seattle-area women, ages 50 to 75, who were indiscriminately assigned to one of four groups: exercise only, diet only, exercise plus diet and no intervention.

According to the National Institutes of Health, vitamin D plays many crucial roles in the body. It increases calcium absorption and is requisite for bone growth and bone healing. Along with calcium, vitamin D helps protect older adults from osteoporosis and youngsters from rickets.

The Vitamin D also acts upon cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, and lessen the inflammation. Many gene-encoding proteins that regularize cell proliferation, differentiation, and programmed cell death necessary to prevent cancer are modulated in part by the vitamin.

Blackbeard Largest Anchor Found

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Archaeologists Friday successfully brocaded an anchor from the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship that pirate Blackbeard and his crew advisedly grounded off the North Carolina coast in 1718.

The about 2500 to 3000-pound anchor is the largest artifact yet recovered from the wreck of the ill-famed pirate's flagship.

The anchor, one of four carried alongside the ship, was atop a pile of detritus, which appears to be the ends of the middle part of the ship, including its cargo hold, said Mark Wilde-Ramsing, a deputy state archaeologist and director of the Queen Anne's Revenge project.

Next week, Wilde-Ramsing said, researchers hope to make a small test hole into the side of the pile where the anchor was removed to get a sense of what else might be out of sight there. They're especially keen to find organic material such as seeds and spores that could help detail the pirates' stops in alien ports.

Queen Anne's Revenge was in the beginning the French slave ship La Concorde that Blackbeard and his band captured in the fall of 1717 in the Caribbean and renamed. It led a four-ship pirate fleet that hunted for prey in the Caribbean over the winter, and then moved up the U.S. coast in the spring of 1718.

After stoping Charleston and holding hostages until frightened residents handed over a chest of medicine as redeem, the pirates ran their flagship aground near the inlet leading to Beaufort in what some think was an intentional act by Blackbeard to reduce the size of the fleet.

Blackbeard, an Englishman whose real name was thought to be Edward Teach, was killed by Royal Navy sailors in a battle near Ocracoke.

Klonopin

When you think of pop music in the 1970s and 1980s, you think of Fleetwood Mac as well as  Stevie Nicks, the lead singer for many of their biggest hits.

Many Fleetwood Mac related persons have had their substance troubles over the years, but Stevie Nicks was over the top, often using cocaine right on stage. Regrettably, the cure was worse than the disease: in attempting to get recovered of her cocaine addiction, she ended up losing eight years of her life to a much worse problem - addiction to a perfectly legal, FDA-approved drug called Klonopin.

How Does Klonopin equate To Medical Marijuana?

Although Klonopin is an FDA-approved drug, it has many side effects, some quite severe, and some which might make you even question the sanity of those prescribing it. For instance, why take Klonopin for panic or anxiety disorders, when withdrawing from it can cause panic attacks or anxiety?

For this reason, we've taken the following info from Wikipedia, and highlighted in bold any side effects or uses that equalize those known for cannabis. I think most people would be more willing to try a safer drug like cannabis for anxiety or panic than risk side effects such as depression, seizures, or long-term/permanent cognitive impairment. I bet Stevie Nicks would.

Trade Name: Klonopin
Generic Name: Clonazepam

Some Typical Uses:

    Epilepsy
    Anxiety disorders
    Panic disorder
    Initial treatment of mania.
Acute psychosis (used with other drugs)

Very Common Side Effects:

    Drowsiness
Interference with cognitive and motor performance

Long Term Effects:

The long term effects of clonazepam are included depression, disinhibition, and sexual dysfunction. Long-term use of benzodiazepines is also associated with cognitive impairments that can remain for at least 6 months post-withdrawal, but it is unclear whether these impairments take more than six months to slack off or if they are permanent.

Tom Jones On American Idol

America got quite a ethnical wakeup call watching American Idol Wednesday night. After Scotty McCreery, whose bent is toward country music, won the singing contest, and got to meet Carrie Underwood backstage, the show ended with a performance by Sir Tom Jones.

Tom Jones, born June 7, 1940, is now 71 years old and from a time, the 1960s, of Go-Go Girls, James Bond, and his own show, manifest to a whole new audience that he's not only still got it, but at a high level.

With his American Idol display, Sir Tom efficaciously pushed together Americans who were 13, 33, 53, and 73 years old. Only a few performers can do that; Tom Jones and Mick Jagger are part of that club.

The Rolling Stones front man, was rocking at the time of Tom Jones, and when he gave his rendition of "Everybody Needs Somebody," the reaction to 67-year-old Mick Jagger throw in' down at The 2011 Grammy's was equal to that of Tom Jones.

And, like Jones, young people who use Twitter to get their information, were sharing tweets about a person some in the media counted as getting too old to do his craft.

Mick Jagger and Tom Jones have shown that it's possible to have entertainers who surpass generations, and vast distances of time and culture, but that only could have happened with social media. Hot USA News

Lee DeWyze Refused?

Disputation is brewing in the wake of last night's "American Idol" season finale - and it has nothing to do with the conflict between champ Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina.

Evidently, there was some behind-the-scenes trouble with last season's winner, Lee DeWyze.

DeWyze was seated several rows back in the audience and not instantly acknowledged during the telecast, leading some observers to think something had gone down.

The plot thickened earlier today.

the show's executive producer, Nigel  Lythgoe,, tweeted, "I was so upset Lee DeWyze wouldn't present the winners trophy to Scotty. Especially as he'd been on the show this Season. I guess he was shy."

Did DeWyze genuinely refuse to take part in McCreery's coronation?

According to the Season 9 winner, that's not just what happened.

"Just for the record… I was not asked to be involved in the Finale," DeWyze tweeted early this evening.

"It wasn't until about 2 minutes before they announced [the winner] that Nigel had approached me and asked if he could 'borrow' me for a second. I didn’t feel a last second jump on stage was appropriate. It was Scotty's moment."

"I appreciate American Idol, and the opportunity it has given me. And the people who have made that show possible."

"I am not angry or bitter etc. It was an amazing Finale, and I would have loved to be a part of it. I just wasn’t asked."

DeWyze also congratulated both McCreery and Alaina.

Elizabeth Smart Relief

Nearly nine years after she was snatched at knifepoint from her bed, Elizabeth Smart followed Wednesday without showing any emotion as a federal judge ordered a street preacher to spend the rest of his life in prison for kidnapping and raping her while holding her kidnapped for months.

The sentencing of Brian David Mitchell closed a major legal chapter in the heartrending ordeal that waited for years after Mitchell was announced mentally ill and unable to stand trial in state court.

"I know that you know what you did is wrong," Smart told Mitchell as he sang quietly in the courtroom. "You took away nine months of my life that can never be returned."

Dressed in a hounds-tooth checked skirt, ivory jacket and pearls, Smart took the witness stand for only about 30 seconds and faced Mitchell in court for the first time.

She appeared self-collected and composed, speaking in even tones.

"I have a wonderful life," she said. "You will never affect me again."

After the hearing Smart smiled and embraced family members and her lawyers. She later said she was thrilled with the sentence.

Mitchell did not reply when U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball handed down to life sentences at the hearing in Salt Lake City. Federal sentencing rules do not allow parole.

A jury unanimously convicted the 57-year-old Mitchell in December of snatching and unlawful transferral of a minor across state lines for sex.

Jared Loughner Mentally Incompetent

Jared Loughner, accused of shooting Gabrielle Giffords and killing 6 people in a violent disorder in Tuscon this January, has been ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial by a federal judge today.

"The decision by U.S. District Judge Larry Burns means 21-year-old Jared Lee Loughner will be sent to a federal facility for up to four months in a bid to restore his competency.

Wednesday's ruling comes after Loughner spent five weeks in March and April at a federal facility in Missouri, where he was examined by two court-appointed mental health professionals."

Loughner has pleaded not guilty to the accusations that he killed 6 and injured 12 in a shooting fling at a shopping mall January 8. His lawyers haven't explicitly said they would follow up on an insanity defense at trial, but based on old filings it's clear that would compile a major part of their defense.

There has been no populace release of the competency reports from the mental health experts who worked with Loughner in Missouri, but intelligibly they found him unfit to stand trial. I'm not sure another four months will change that expectation.

Giffords remains under treatment for her injuries and recently had skull surgery.

Biggest Loser Winner Olivia Ward

Olivia Ward is now a living, breathing will to the benefits of purpose and putting one's mind to attaining a goal, no matter how essential.

After an unlikely 129-pound weight loss within eight months, the New York City opera singer was won Season 11's Biggest Loser on NBC Tuesday.

Ward and sister Hannah Curlee became breakout stars following a stunning run during the trip to New Zealand earlier this year, both making the finals.

Also in the final four ahead of the finale were Irene Alvarado and Jay Jacobs, who competed for America's vote and the right to compete for the ultimate prize.

Joining Hannah and Olivia in an all-female final three was Irene, who became a best chum to the Purple Team during the season. All four were suitable.

In the end, it was Olivia Ward who edged the contest and was crowned the winner. But manifestly, all of these giant losers were winners last night!

Joseph Brooks Has Passed Away

Joseph Brooks, the Oscar-winning songwriter of 'You Light Up My Life' who was criminated of multiple counts of rape, was found dead in New York of an evident suicide.

According to the Associated Press, the 73-year-old's body was found on a sofa in his Upper East Side apartment by a friend on Sunday afternoon. Brooks had a plastic laundry bag tied around his head and a towel rolled around his neck, and a hose attached to a helium tank was linked up to the bag. Police also found a suicide note but the contents have not been made public.

In the 1977, Brooks found fame after writing the Debby Boone ballad 'You Light Up My Life' for the film of the same name, which he also wrote, directed and produced. He would go on to win an Academy Award and a Grammy for the song.

In 2009, Brooks reentered the public eye when he was charged of the rape and sexual abuse of 13 women. He allegedly lured them to his New York City apartment under the pretending of a movie audition, drugged them and hassle them. He pled not guilty and the case had yet to go to trial.

The Brooks family came under even more scrutiny in 2010 when Brooks' 26-year-old son, Nicholas, was criminated of murdering his girlfriend, swimsuit designer Sylvie Cachay, in New York's posh Soho House club and hotel. His trial is pending.

Conan The Barbarian 1970

It could be contended that this first film in the Merry Marvel movie list isn't a Marvel movie at all. To be certain, Robert E. Howard's "Conan" books came out years before the Marvel Comics similitude, and the film is most probably based on those books more than the genuine comics, but Conan was a Marvel Comics property beginning in 1970, and that character was not changed drastically from the archetypes, making this film eligible.

Thisclassic swords-and-sandal epic begins with Conan's (Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role that made him a star) original story, where his village is looted by the evil wizard Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones, sporting a wicked long wig with the bangs cut off). His parents are killed, including his mother in front of the young Conan.

The young Conan is  imprisoned, his years of ceaseless labor making him physically strong, and he promptly becomes a champion in death matches and is trained as a warrior. He is set free, and soon comes across the path of a seductive harpy with whom Conan couples. She reveals herself mid-coitus to be a demon, and Conan throws her into a fire and goes on with his life.

Later he crosses paths with the thief and archer Rexor (Ben Davidson), and the fair Valeria , , and they accompany Conan on his request.

Later they meet King Osric (Max Von Sydow), whom has also had inauspicious dealings with Doom-he claimed Osric's daughter as his wife, Strict charges Conan and his friends with rescuing his daughter, promising them riches enough to be kings in their own right, leading to the final encounter between Conan and Doom.

The effects are scarcely great by today's standards, but neither are they distractingly bad. The swordplay is unruffled enough, though there is astonishingly little of it. This is as broody a film as one of its type can be.
